Bike Passport scheme launched in Bristol

A simple but effective idea for clamping down on bike crime and reuniting stolen bikes with their owners has been launched in Bristol.

Cycling City's Bike Passport is a document that contains your bike's essential details, along with advice on theft prevention. Fill it in, keep it somewhere safe, and then if your bike is stolen you can pass it on to the police.

Many people don't keep a record of essential information like their bike's serial number, which can scupper their chances of ever getting it back if it's stolen. If you've not done this yet, download your Bike Passport here.

  1. Since they're putting so much effort into producing a leaflet, it would be worth adjusting the image so that a slightly more clever way of locking your bike is shown, ie through the back wheel (specifically, through the rim, not just the spokes) as well as the frame. It's nice to get your stolen bike back, it's nicer if you can maximise your chances of keeping the bike and all its parts in the first place!

  2. Bristol police have produced a leaflet called "Spokes" which you can pick up in places like bike shops - Cyclelife in Stokes Croft had loads when I popped in the other day. It contains lots of theft prevention advice, including how to lock your bike. It also has some pretty groan-inducing jokes...

  3. Glad to see the Cycling City budget is being spent on things other than the new Gloucester Road signs reminding me I will be fined £30 if caught riding on the pavement. My mate just had a Whyte E5 and an Orange 5 stolen today, he'll probaby be posting up soon. Classic case of "axe used to smash down door in broad daylight while burglar alarm was gonig off...."
